While the world of BI is trying to make non analyst users start using BI, I am starting to believe that the only way information workers and business users will use BI is if we make it possible to use the data without the BI Tools.
One of the ways you think about innovation is by actually ‘killing’ the most important feature of your product – so for me it is killing the existing front ends leaving me with data and a user. Starting here I believe new and innovative BI Concepts come together. Let me give you an example of some things we have going on:
We all know everybody is using Microsoft Office. (I know, I know…. Every BI vendor is talking about putting BI in office….bare with me)… so think about a business user, he is working with outlook, outlook that brings all his key data such as email, tasks and calendar now has a new component called personal BI, just like he sees his emails he has live visibility into the key metrics he has selected to track. It can be KPIs or even specific calculated members…. So BI data without having to ever see any BI tool….
But outlook is just one example, I’m working on enabling any Office Client to consume BI Content , For example: drag and drop one of those metrics from my personal dashboard into a Powerpoint as I’m working on a presentation for someone and having that data stay live in the slide….
The Personal Dashboard gives the user a rich and fully personalized control, which is embedded in Office applications task panes and constantly displays live data from Panorama NovaView. So BI in non BI tools is what will make more users adopt the concept of BI And start making decisions based on live data vs. gut feeling.
Stay tuned for more BI with no BI clients….
