A recent survey conducted by DecisionPath Consulting’s Business Intelligence and Data Warehousing department delivered insight into the broad perceptions many companies have concerning business intelligence.
The report, titled ‘Is BI Being Used Effectively?’, revealed that the utilization of business intelligence is still in early stages at the company level. While adoption is becoming widespread, BI at most companies is in need of maturation. According to the report, many BI deployments are viewed as standard reports rather than mission-critical applications used to improve decision making.
At the business function level, the report discovered a chasm between the needs and use of BI. While end-users want more sophisticated analytics solutions, many are unaware of new technology available.

Generally, a company such as Warner Bros. focuses its efforts to stop piracy. But the television and film producer is veering off the traditional path, using business intelligence in an effort to convert pirates into consumers.
At the recent Content Protection Summit in Los Angeles, Ben Karakunnel, director of business intelligence for the company’s anti-piracy unit, explained the unique way Warner Bros. is utilizing the technology to track piracy of its products. By rooting out and identifying illegal trading trends, Warner Bros. plans to alter sales strategy to better position its products and stay ahead of pirates.
Karakunnel gave the example of international markets, where pirates often dub or subtitle films themselves. WB found that by the 10th day after a film debuts or a program is aired, pirate-translated versions account for 74 percent of illegally shared products.

Businesses’ need for scalable, well-performing warehouse platforms is driven by market challenges including the enormous growth of data, the need for real-time access, and the ability to instantly generate business insight in order to compete better.
With its Parallel Data Warehouse (PDW), Microsoft is changing the name of the game by releasing a high-end, mission critical product with around a million dollar SKU. The customer market is anxious to see the benefits of the Microsoft solution, which is based on a product they purchased two years ago from Data Allegro previously known as Project Madison for the last two years.
Microsoft typically plays at the lower end of the market, always trying to compete on pricing and catering to the masses. It’s an interesting move, considering you can buy a SQL Server for less than $25K or even have an express version for free. It’s also a very competitive battlefield where Oracle, IBM and Teradata have been active for many years.

“As with many new and innovative technologies, BI as a class of software evolved in other industries and is now being introduced to construction,” Burger wrote.

All this, combined with quality images and reports, can help radiologists speed turnaround time to referring physicians that initially ordered tests.
