Types, extent of BI use identified in new report

May 4 , 2011

BeyeNetwork Report on BIThe BeyeNetwork recently released the results of a survey it conducted with the help of Saint Joseph's University. Responses from the 79 business intelligence professionals reveal key insight into how companies rely on BI technology.

All respondents of the State of Business Intelligence survey came from either BeyeNetwork's membership community or from the Data Warehousing Institute's Business Intelligence and Data Warehousing Discussion Group on LinkedIn.

According to BeyeNetwork contributor Richard Herschel, the main goal of the survey was to track and find out where exactly companies across the globe stand in terms of their BI deployment.

When asked to describe their company's BI deployment, respondents' answers showcased a shift to self-service business intelligence over traditional models. One-third said their BI team responds to most projects, but business users also utilize BI tools to address specific needs. By comparison, 26 percent of respondents said that BI teams handle all projects and deliver results to the business side of the organization.

Somewhat discouraging, however, is the fact that 25 percent of respondents said their "BI capabilities are inadequate."

Nevertheless, for those companies that are satisfied with the results of their BI deployment, the technology is heavily relied upon by senior-level management. In most instances, getting C-level executives and other higher-ups on board with a BI platform can directly affect its performance and acceptance by business users, experts have agreed.

Among the study group, a combined 60 percent of respondents answered "about half the time" or "most of the time" when asked to what extent senior management relies on BI results for decision making. Another 10 percent said BI is utilized "all the time" in such situations.

The survey also asked respondents to demonstrate where they believe the BI field is heading in the next 12 months. Among the predictions, just fewer than 22 percent foresee a slight increase in demand for SaaS business intelligence, 30.8 percent see a dramatic increase in demand for overall BI services and a total of 50.8 percent see either a slight or dramatic increase for the integration of social business intelligence.

According to an Information Management report published last month, outlining specific goals for BI is a key determinant for its success and overall use. Many BI projects are unsuccessful and abandoned, because they lack direction and divert off-course during execution.
