Gartner: Communication key for successful business intelligence projects
January 12, 2011
Business intelligence projects most often fail because of a lack of communication within a company, according to a recent report from market research firm Gartner.
The report revealed between 70 and 80 percent of BI projects fail, on average, and a lack of communication is to blame. According to Gartner, business and IT fail to relay their needs to each other and also don't ask the right questions or think about the real needs of the business.
"If you don't ask the right questions, BI is not a crystal ball that pops out the answer," Patrick Meehan, president and research director in Gartner's CIO Research group, said.
Part of the problem, Meehan said, is that CEOs and CIOs approach business intelligence from different sides. By collaborating more, the executives' companies may start to see a return on their BI project investment.
Last month, Gartner reported that BI is only successful when it is promoted as a cultural transformation within the company. By doing so, companies will get the most out of their BI deployment, while also keeping strategy execution on track, Gartner said. It's important for BI to address all levels of employees and management within the company, according to the report.
