How do you currently conduct business intelligence in your organization? If you’re like most companies, you need IT to build the data warehouse, define semantics, create process and optimize cubes. Once you’ve built your data warehouse, you need to make changes as users request new reports and analysis. It’s an effective process, but not necessarily a speedy one.

Microsoft understood this pain point and created PowerPivot (formerly known as Project Gemini) to solve it. PowerPivot is the next major update to Analysis Services and uses an in-memory, column-based storage mode to enable users to perform analysis on pre-defined models, without having to pre-aggregate or build cubes prior to querying.

With PowerPivot, users can integrate data from multiple sources including corporate databases, Excel spreadsheets and external sources, using familiar tools but gaining greater power and analysis capacity.

Advanced analytical capabilities for PowerPivot

With the development of PowerPivot, Panorama saw several opportunities to improve the way Information Workers access and interact with data. Panorama adds unique dimensions to the PowerPivot experience in two ways – it enables users to build models in a Web browser and offers comprehensive front-end analytical capabilities. 

Modeling in the Web browser:

Currently integrated as part of the latest version of NovaView, the Panorama Universal Data Connector (UDC) enables Information Workers to connect to any type of data source via the browser. Once connected, users can create the necessary model for analysis, automatically.

The next release of UDC will be based natively on the PowerPivot engine, accelerating time to analysis by enabling connections to several data sources and automating the creation of in-memory models.

Advanced analytics on PowerPivot models:

Panorama NovaView is one of the most powerful and advanced BI suites for the Microsoft Platform. The next version of NovaView will have native integration to PowerPivot models - enabling users to perform even more sophisticated analysis, build pixel perfect reports with NovaView Smart Reporting or even create executive dashboards - all sourcing natively from PowerPivot. Once users build models, Panorama delivers a powerful web-based front end to access the models and perform analysis.

 

Working with Office 2010

Panorama integrates with all versions of Office, but will offer new, powerful capabilities that take advantage of Office 2010. Because PowerPivot will improve the Excel experience greatly, Panorama is offering further enhancements to the user’s analytical capabilities. With one click of a button, users can drill from Excel to Panorama for deeper analysis.

It opens up new opportunities to create a seamless back and forth flow between Excel and Panorama. User can keep using Excel as a key part of the BI process, without experiencing any limitations on advanced analysis including browser-based reporting, dashboarding and data visualization.
