After creating a model, you need to build it by defining the scope of the data, the measures, hierarchies and filters.
These definitions are performed in the following tabs:
§ My World
§ Measures
§ Date and Time
§ Hierarchies
§ Filters
After creating the model, the My World tab of the model designer opens on the Models page. It lists all the fields from the selected data source (e.g. columns from the Excel file).
Here you define the scope of the model by selecting both the descriptive and numeric fields you want to include in it.
Select the check box of the
fields you want to include. Click to select all the fields.
You can rename fields in a way that is going to be most helpful to the end user, for example, by giving them business-oriented instead of database-derived names. Click the Edit button.
Change the caption and click the checkmark.
The Measures tab displays the numeric fields you have selected in My World. Here you select the fields that contain the quantitative (measurable) information you need for the analysis. For each field you can also specify the format and aggregation method.
To select fields:
§ Select the check box on the heading of a field to include it in the model.
§
Click to select all the fields.
To define field properties:
1.
Click on
the field heading (or double-click on the heading).
2. If you have selected the check box on the field heading, the Use field will appear selected. You can use this field in the same way as the check box on the field heading to select/deselect a field.
3. In Format, choose a display format for the values.
4. In Aggregation Type, select the type of aggregation that should apply to this measure. Sum works well in the majority of cases.
5. Click Apply.
After entering a modification, you can use the Reset button to restore the initial values.
Time structures such as day, month and quarter are essential for effective analysis. Usually, this information is stored in a single field but a time hierarchy needs to be set up for analysis. You can build multiple hierarchies if required. For example, for a retail business model you might want to create a time hierarchy using sale time and delivery time.
The Date and Time Hierarchies tab displays selected fields from My World that are of datetime type. If no fields display in this section, it means there are no datetime fields in the data source.
To define a time hierarchy:
1. Click Add.
2. In the New Hierarchy tab, enter a Name for the new time hierarcy.
3. In Field, select a datetime field.
4. In Structure, select a time hierarchy structure.
5. Click Apply.
Click Add to define additional time
hierarchies.
To remove a hierarchy, click
on
its heading.
In this tab, you group various database fields into a customized hierarchical structure. For example, you may want to build a product hierarchy using the Product Category, Sub-category and Product Name database fields, and create a geographic hierarchy containing the Country, City and Address database fields. You can define as many hierarchies as you want and reuse fields from one hierarchy when building another one.
To define a hierarcy:
1. Click Add.
2. In the New Hierarchy tab, enter a Name for the new hierarcy.
3. Drag fields from the Available Fields panel and drop them into the Hierarchy panel.
You must arrange the fields according to the natural order of the hierarchy you are building, starting with the biggest groupings (branches) and proceeding to the leaf level objects. In the Hierarchy panel, you can reorder fields by dragging them to the new position.
4. Click Apply.
Click Add to define additional
hierarchies.
To remove a hierarchy, click
on
its heading.
In this tab, you can create filters to narrow the model’s data and make it more efficient.
To define a filter:
1. Click Add.
2. In the New Filter tab select a Filtered Field.
3. In Filter Type select either Select Values (to filter by selected values) or From-To (to filter by a range of values).
4. If you selected Select Values, drag values from the Available Values panel to the Selected Values panel.
If you selected From-To, define a range by selecting a value in From and another in To. If you want this range to be excluded from the model data, select the Exclude the selected range option.
5. Click Apply.
Click Add to define additional filters.
To remove a filter definition,
click on
its heading.
The Summary tab summarizes the model structure and allows you to check that everything is defined correctly.
